UCP1 protein, or uncoupling protein 1, is a mitochondrial carrier found predominantly in brown adipose tissue (BAT) that plays a crucial role in non-shivering thermogenesis. It facilitates the return of protons to the mitochondrial matrix, dissipating the protonmotive force and thereby generating heat instead of ATP, which is vital for maintaining body temperature and energy balance. UCP1 is activated by fatty acids and is inhibited by purine nucleotides, and its unique function is essential for adaptive thermogenesis in response to cold and metabolic challenges.
