Tau (phospho S214) protein is a phosphorylated form of the tau protein, which is a microtubule-associated protein primarily found in neurons of the central nervous system. It is encoded by the MAPT gene and plays a crucial role in maintaining the stability and promoting the assembly of microtubules in axons. The phosphorylation of tau at serine 214 (S214) by cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) has been shown to reduce the pathological assembly of the protein. This phosphorylation event is significant as it can influence the protein's binding affinity to microtubules and its involvement in neurofibrillary tangles, which are a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies.
