Transferrin, also referred to as Serotransferrin, Beta-1 metal-binding globulin, or TF, is an iron-binding blood plasma glycoprotein that regulates the levels of free iron in biological fluids. Despite the fact that iron complexed with transferrin represents less than 0.1% (4 mg) of the total body iron, this pool is the most critical due to its high turnover rate of 25 mg per 24 hours. Transferrin exhibits an extremely high affinity for Fe(III) ions, which diminishes progressively as the pH decreases below neutrality. When not complexed with iron, transferrin is termed “apo-transferrin”.
Measured in a serum-free cell proliferation assay using MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. The ED50 for this effect is typically 15-30ng/ml.
