Tau protein is a microtubule-associated protein (MAP) that is abundantly expressed in neurons of the central nervous system and is scarcely found in other cell types. It primarily contributes to maintaining the structure and stability of microtubules, which are crucial for the normal function and axonal transport of neurons. Phosphorylation is an important mode of regulating Tau protein function. Abnormal levels or functions of Tau (phospho S404) may be associated with specific types of neurodegenerative diseases.
